I think the real key to playing the game is to keep an eye on the number of matches left, keep a healthy number and if they drop too low try some different combinations.....I know I am relatively new but does this sound good tactics?

Yes, it does. It is the way I played game at start. But back-tracking takes time. And though I was able to beat a puzzle in one or but a few times, I rarely was in the best times list. lol. Speeding around in Speed Mode and starting over and over again makes me high up in that list. But why and for whom? I never look back to it anyway.
I love you for reminding me to this way of playing. It is far more fun to play a layout that way.
I am back to puzzling method. Karma for you.

Hey Gerda, I'm new to this place, and little did I know that a game like this even existed.. Me personally, one game can't keep me happy, which is why I'm a big fish games member too, but anyway, I keep my time between this game and playing on www.pogo.com too, not advertizing, have just been a member there for 2 years, because it's a great place to really meet people..Anyway, I love that you can create your own puzzles here, it's one reason I bought the game, but how do I make tiles at a 45 degree angle like some players have???I've seen it in the earthquake layouts and butterflies, but can you help???GeorgesM

First thing first: Did you manage to send your tilesets to Charmedjenn already?
Now about the layouts. I do not know earthquake layouts. Who made them? Take a look to see how the layouts are build up. That is how it is done. Look at the layouts. Then try it yourself. I learned by trial and error. (That is if you mean -Butterflies- layout.) It is fun part of the game to try things out.

I'm going to share some of my knowledge... Trying to stay level with your matches keeps a healthy amount of new tiles appearing... meaning- don't make matches in certain areas while leaving other areas of tiles piled high... of course at some points you'll have to make decisions or have no choice. lol I'm still trying to figure out the tile apperance nature, sometimes it seems random no matter what I do... you can experiment on layouts that seem to always have you shuffling at a certain point, try different matching techniques to see how it affects reaching that shuffle/(running out of matches) point on a board. Also keep in mind that layouts have different difficulty settings so it may not always be your choices that affect the new tiles appearing as much as it is just a more difficult board to solve.

Is there a strategy other than what chrs84 mentions? I try matching tiles in layers, exposing new ones but there has to be more to it than that since I don't always get to complete the layout.

Hi wgander Welcome to the forum In my view its just the luck of the tiles - sometimes ya get through further on 1 attempt than ya do another - the tile positioning changes everytime you reattempt a layout - if we both downloaded the same lo ya can guarentee theyd be matched differently so are attempted & or completed differntly - it also depends on how hard the layout creator has set the solution difficulty to when theyv created it as well - & some can be pretty much impossible!! Enjoy!!
